Melissa at her studio in Savannah, Georgia

Melissa, Sam, and Louie

Melissa Cohen is the imaginative force behind the brand Metal Sugar. The name Metal Sugar came to her in a dream over 15 years ago, after taking her first metalsmithing class and falling completely in love with jewelry making.  At that time, Melissa was working in a corporate job in Atlanta and felt lost and unfulfilled.  This newfound passion for jewelry was transformative, in that she realized this is what she wanted to do with her life.

Shortly after, Melissa moved to New York and immersed herself in the jewelry world and diamond district for the next 10 years.  Always interested in learning and improving her skills, she took as many classes and workshops as she could.  She started to make her mark as a bespoke fine jeweler while living in New York and prided herself on being found mainly through word of mouth.

After becoming a mom and realizing the hustle and bustle of the city was getting to be too exhausting, Melissa, her husband Sam (also her jewelry partner), and their daughter Louie, made the move to Tybee Island, GA a little over 6 years ago.

As a metalsmith for over 17 years, Melissa has developed a wide range of pieces in her own line.  On one end of the spectrum, you'll find her clever, sweet, and often funny pieces, and on the other end, you'll find her delicate, gemstone driven, fine jewelry designs.  She is always trying out new techniques, continues to take classes, and works with recycled metals and responsibly sourced gemstones from around the world.

In March of 2020, Melissa opened a Jewelry Showroom & Studio in the Starland District in Savannah, GA where she makes and sells her work. She often meets with clients there, by appointment, to discuss one-of-a-kind custom designs, ranging from wedding & engagement rings to heirloom recreations.  You can also find Melissa’s work on Instagram.

Melissa takes the intimidating aspect of working on a custom piece and makes it informative and fun.  Not only will you walk away with a well-made, beautiful piece of jewelry, you may just walk away with a new jeweler friend for life!
